Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid, son of coach Andy Reid, involved in car accident in Kansas City that injured two children

The Kansas City Chiefs confirmed in a statement that assistant linebackers coach Britt Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, was involved in a multiple-vehicle crash Thursday night in Kansas City.

According to Kansas City's 41 Action News and The Kansas City Star, two young children were injured in the collision – a 4-year-old and 5-year-old. The reports said both were hospitalized, with the 5-year-old suffering life-threatening injuries.

The Chiefs' statement released Friday evening read, “The organization has been made aware of a multi-vehicle accident involving Outside Linebackers Coach, Britt Reid. We are in the process of gathering information, and we will have no further comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.”

Britt Reid is no longer an employee of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs are scheduled to arrive in Tampa, Florida, on Saturday for Sunday's Super Bowl 55 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Reid is not expected to make the trip, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not made an announcement on that decision.

Reid, 35, has worked on the Chiefs' coaching staff since 2013.

The three-vehicle crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. Central time, Thursday south of the Chiefs' practice facility, according to 41 Action News, where Reid's vehicle struck a stranded vehicle. The driver and two children were in the vehicle at the time.

The TV station reported that, according to a search warrant, a Kansas City police officer reported a odor of alcohol. The station also said that according to the warrant, Reid told police he had two to three drinks.

Captain Dave Jackson of the Kansas City Police, when contacted by USA TODAY Sports, would not confirm any names of those involved in an incident at the location in the TV station report but provide these details:

"AIS responded to meet MPD and EPD in regard to a three vehicle collision, with life threatening injuries. A grey Chevy Impala was on the southbound entrance ramp from Stadium Drive. The Chevy Impala ran out of gas and was initially stopped with flashers on, but the battery was dying. The driver and lone occupant of the Chevy Impala called his cousins for help. The cousins responded and parked their silver Chevy Traverse, south of the stranded Chevy Impala, with their lights on. A white Ram Laramie Sport pickup was traveling on the entrance ramp, to get on southbound I-435. The Ram pickup struck the left front of the stranded Chevy Impala. The Ram continued south and slammed into the rear of the stopped Chevy Traverse. The driver of the Chevy Impala was sitting inside his vehicle at the time of the first collision. He was not injured in the collision. The driver of the Chevy Traverse and the front seat adult passenger were not injured in the collision. A four year old in the back seat of the Chevy Traverse was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A five year old in the back seat of the Chevy Traverse was transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. The driver of the Ram pickup received non-life threatening injuries. Impairment is under investigation."
