Arizona Republicans have a plan to make it easier to steal a presidential election
Frontpage news and politics

Efforts by former President Donald Trump and his attorneys to overturn Joe Biden's Electoral College victory in Arizona proved unsuccessful when Republican Gov. Doug Ducey — much to Trump's chagrin — certified the election results and acknowledged Biden as Arizona's winner. But Arizona State Rep. Shawnna Bolick has introduced a bill that, according to Talking Point Memo's Tierney Sneed, would make it "much easier for Arizona's legislature to try to overturn the results of a presidential election."

Sneed explains, "The legislation would give state legislators the authority, by a majority vote, to 'revoke' the state certification of the presidential election in the state. Such a subversion of the democratic process was exactly what President Trump was pushing for in Arizona and other battleground states that elected Joe Biden."

Bolick chairs the Arizona House Ways and Means Committee and is married to Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick. Her bill, Arizona House Bill 2720, proposes, "The legislature may take action pursuant to this subsection without any regard to whether the legislature is in regular or special session or has held committee or other hearings on the matter."

U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego has warned that if the measure passes, he'll work to pass a statewide referendum to reverse it:

Critics of Trump have been warning that although the former president and his lawyers were unsuccessful in derailing Biden's victory — Biden was sworn in as president on Jan. 20 — that doesn't mean they won't try that type of thing again in the future.

"State Republican legislative leaders in states like Pennsylvania said that they did not believe they had the authority to do what Trump was seeking, which was to reject the Biden electors from the state and put forward Trump electors instead," Sneed notes. "Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) was attacked by Trump for certifying Biden's win there."

Bolick's bill, according to Sneed, "would create a glide path for executing a Trump-like scheme for overturning the state's election results. It says that the vote on revoking the certification of the results could happen any time before the inauguration and does not require any rationale for undoing the certification."
