Statewide coronavirus update: Indiana reports lowest daily case total since October

Indiana reported 1,777 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday along with 80 additional deaths, for a total of 614,946 cases since the start of the pandemic and 9,432 deaths.

The number of new cases reported Tuesday was the lowest single number for any day since the middle of October.

Positivity rates have also plummeted since the start of the month. The number of tests being performed each day has also declined. The state has averaged about 41,000 tests a day over the past seven days, according to the most recent non-preliminary data. At the height of testing, more than 54,700 tests were being done on average.

The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 across the state dipped below the 2,000 mark for the first time since early November.

Only three counties reported more than 100 new cases Tuesday and only four saw 50 or more new cases.

Here are some other statistics of note:

  • People in Indiana hospitals with COVID-19: 1,976.
  • State positivity rates (seven-day rate as of Jan. 19: For all tests performed, 9.3%. For unique individuals, 17.7%.
  • Initial doses of vaccine administered: 459,701. Of those, 18,888 reported in past 24 hours.
  • Fully vaccinated Hoosiers: 106,874. Of those, 6,858 were reported in past 24 hours.
  • Intensive care unit-bed availability: 33.1% of 2,167 beds. 20.7% of beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients.
  • Ventilator availability: 75.5% of 2,805.
  • Average number of deaths a day as of Jan. 19: 48.
  • Regenstrief Institute estimate of people currently infected: 27,886.
  • Counties with 100 or more newly reported cases: Marion (248), Allen (124), Lake (117).
  • Other counties with 50 or more newly reported cases: Hamilton (88), Vanderburgh (71),  Hendricks (61), Johnson (52).
  • Other counties with 20 or more newly reported cases: Clark (44), Tippecanoe (44), St. Joseph (44), Monroe (38), Morgan (35), Howard (35), Warrick (31), Porter (29), LaPorte (28), Hancock (25), Madison (25), Delaware (24), Vigo (24), Grant (23), Dearborn (22), Shelby (22), Bartholomew (20), Whitley (20).
