The Milwaukee area is expected to get hit with 4 to 10 inches of snow, with the highest totals along the lakefront, the National Weather Service said.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday, the weather service at Sullivan said, for Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties. A winter weather advisory is in effect for Sheboygan, Washington, Waukesha, Walworth counties until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Travel could be difficult and, with wind gusts up to 35 mph, blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, the weather service said.

"These winds may also lead to the potential for some localized lakeshore flooding and erosion for locations south of Milwaukee," the weather service said in a statement.

The snowfall will be moderate to heavy at times, especially early Tuesday morning, with the highest amounts along and south of I-94.

Snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour are possible near Lake Michigan, where 6 to 10 inches of snow are expected, the weather service said in a Monday night update.

Elsewhere in southeast Wisconsin, about 4 to 6 inches are expected.

The hazardous conditions will likely affect Tuesday morning's commute and linger into the evening commute, the weather service said.

Lake effect snow could continue falling through Wednesday morning along the lakefront, the weather service said.

The expected new round of snow follows a weekend storm that dropped 2 to 4 inches of snow across the Milwaukee region.
