The New York Mets issued a statement late Monday night acknowledging they were aware of an ESPN report that said new general manager Jared Porter sent unsolicited messages and lewd photos to a female reporter in 2016.

Mets President Sandy Alderson said the team was made aware of the situation, which occurred when Porter was working for the Chicago Cubs, on Monday night. Alderson also said that Porter "acknowledged to me his serious error in judgment, has taken responsibility for his conduct, has expressed remorse, and has previously apologized for his actions."

"The Mets take these matters seriously, expect professional and ethical behavior from all of our employees, and certainly do not condone the conduct described in (the ESPN) story," Alderson's statement continued. "We will follow up as we review the facts regarding this serious issue.”

ESPN reported that Porter, now 41, inundated the female reporter with text messages upon their meeting in 2016. The reporter, who ESPN said was a foreign correspondent who moved to the United States to cover MLB, initially engaged in conversation with Porter but stopped after receiving a lewd photo. Porter continued to text, per ESPN (who received the text history), with the reporter at one point ignoring 62 consecutive texts.

Porter then sent his most explicit photo, which, per ESPN, prompted the reporter to reply "This is extremely inappropriate, very offensive, and getting out of line. Could you please stop sending offensive photos or msg."

ESPN said when reached Monday night Porter acknowledged texting the woman but said he did not send any pictures of himself. "When told the exchanges show he had sent selfies and other pictures," the ESPN report read, "he said that 'the more explicit ones are not of me. Those are like, kinda like joke-stock images.' "
