Los Angeles Chargers to hire Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as next head coach

The Los Angeles Chargers are hiring Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley as their next head coach, the team announced Sunday night.

NFL Network was the first to report the news.

"It's not just that Brandon possesses a tremendous football mind that makes him the ideal head coach to lead our team forward," general manager Tom Telesco said in a statement. "It's that he excels in the ability to effectively tailor, apply and communicate his concepts to players.

"It's clear that Brandon will not be out-worked, he's the football equivalent of a gym rat, and that has earned him the universal respect of the players he has coached throughout his journey."

In 2020, the Rams defense ranked No. 1 in the NFL in both yards and points allowed in Staley's first season as coordinator. Prior to joining the Rams, Staley, 38, was an outside linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos (2019) and Chicago Bears (2017-18).

Staley joins a Chargers team that finished 7-9 in 2020, but boasts promising rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. Defensively, the team features three-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Joey Bosa.

Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley will be the next coach of the Chargers.

The Chargers fired Anthony Lynn on Jan. 4 after four seasons as the team's head coach. Lynn compiled a 34-32 record (including playoff games) while with the Chargers.

Staley's Rams were eliminated in the divisional playoffs by the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

With the Chargers hiring Staley, there are four open head-coaching vacancies remaining, the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles. Last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Urban Meyer and the New York Jets hired Robert Saleh.
