Alabama's Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith, Florida's Kyle Trask, Clemson's Trevor Lawrence named Heisman finalists

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver DeVonta Smith were two of the four 2020 Heisman Trophy finalists revealed Thursday night by the Heisman Trophy Trust.

Florida quarterback Kyle Trask and Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence are the other two finalists. The winner of the 2020 Heisman Trophy will be announced on Jan. 5.

Jones and Smith are the eighth set of teammates to be finalists together since 1982. 

Alabama senior running back Najee Harris finished No. 5 in the voting, narrowly missing finalist status. Harris' placement at five, though, makes Alabama just the second team to have three players finish in the top five in Heisman voting.

The 1946 Army football team saw Glenn Davis win the Heisman, fellow running back Doc Blanchard finish fourth and quarterback Arnold Tucker finish fifth.

Smith was named as the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year by both the SEC coaches and the Associated Press earlier this week. Jones was selected as the first-team quarterback on the SEC poll released by both groups. 

Alabama has had two Heisman Trophy winners, running backs Mark Ingram Jr. (2009) and Derrick Henry (2015). The first Heisman Trophy was awarded in 1936 but the Heisman Trust first began recognizing finalists along with the winner in 1983. Previous finalists from Alabama, in addition to the two winners, include wide receiver/kick returner David Palmer (1993), quarterback Jay Barker (1994), Trent Richardson (2011), A.J. McCarron (2013), Amari Cooper (2014) and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (2018).

Smith led the country in receptions and receiving yards (1,511 – over 300 yards ahead of second place) and was second in touchdown receptions. His QB, Jones, led the country in completion percentage (76.5%) and passing efficiency.  

Florida's Trask was first in touchdown passes with 43 – 10 clear of second place – and was also first in yards with 4,125. 

Lawrence, the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft who missed two games after testing positive for COVID-19, guided Clemson to the ACC championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff once again.

Quarterbacks have taken home the Heisman nine of the prior 10 seasons. A wide receiver has not won since Desmond Howard did so in 1991.
