Officer Involved Shooting 05

Guam Police Department officers convene at scene of an officer-involved shooting on Bonito Street in Tamuning Nov. 4, 2020.

The investigation into a fatal officer-involved shooting in Tamuning last month is ongoing, according to the Guam Police Department.

The Office of the Attorney General is in charge of the criminal investigation related to the incident and the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency is handling an administrative investigation, according to police spokesman Sgt. Paul Tapao.

Police Chief Stephen Ignacio last month said he would ask Customs and Quarantine and the FBI to assist in the investigations in the interest of transparency.

Guam Police Department officers convene at scene of an officer-involved shooting on Bonito Street in Tamuning, Nov. 4, 2020.

Four unidentified Guam police officers were placed on administrative leave following the fatal Nov. 3 shooting along Bonito Street, during which shots were fired at the occupants of a reported stolen vehicle.

Ignacio has said officers from the Tumon-Tamuning Precinct Command were conducting a follow-up investigation on a theft complaint at an apartment complex along Bonito Street.

During their investigation, police officers saw a possibly stolen blue sedan parked at the apartment complex, with a male driver and female passenger inside.

Police tried to talk to the vehicle occupants, Ignacio reported, but the man accelerated the sedan, striking a police car and another vehicle in the parking lot.

Officers fired their weapons, wounding both occupants in the vehicle, Ignacio said. The man driving the car later was pronounced dead and the woman was taken to Guam Memorial Hospital for treatment. Ignacio said it is unclear how many officers fired their weapons.

Unlike law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions, the Guam Police Department does not provide detailed public information about officer-involved shootings.
