Diego Maradona, soccer legend who led Argentina to 1986 World Cup title, dies at 60

Soccer legend Diego Maradona, a former Argentina midfielder and manager, has died. He was 60 years old.

Matias Morla, Maradona’s longtime agent, confirmed his death to EFE (via ESPN) on Wednesday. Sebastián Sanchi, Maradona’s spokesman, said he died of a heart attack.

According to the BBC, Maradona had successful surgery earlier this month to address a brain blood clot before being released on Nov. 11.

Maradona is best known as the captain who helped guide Argentina to the 1986 World Cup title. At the club level, he played for Barcelona and Napoli. He scored 34 goals in 96 international appearances for Argentina, including four World Cups.

The Argentine Football Association released a statement through its president Claudio Tapia on Wednesday, saying it, "expresses its deepest pain at the death of our legend, Diego Armando Maradona. You'll always be in our hearts."
