Leaders in Living Rooms

I want to introduce you to a great podcast that is a part of my personal repertoire. It’s from my good friend and leader, Sean Morgan, and it’s called Leaders in Living Rooms.

On Leaders in Living Rooms, Sean has backstage conversations, living room style conversations, with great leaders this fall, such as Ray Johnston, Andy Stanley, Derwin Gray, Nicky Gumbel, Lysa TerKeurst and Hosanna Wong.

Sean is a hyper connected leader, and spends a lot of time with founders like me and with their successors to discuss a major issue in church and business, leadership transitions.

INSIGHTS FROM BETH

1. If you view social media as a public square, you might be quicker to embrace it

So many people have seen the negativity and toxicity of social media and have decided to opt out. Beth Moore is not one of those people. Beth has seen more toxicity, outrage and cynicism than almost anyone online, but in spite of all of the negativity, she still continues to spend time on those platforms. Why?

Beth views social media as a public square where she has the opportunity to share the message of Jesus with a crowd that might completely disagree with everything she has to say. But Beth is resilient, and while it can get discouraging, she says that God has given her enough conviction so that no matter who disagrees, she will continue to speak up for what she believes.

2. Social media has the potential to be a very unifying thing for the Church

When social media started, different Christian worlds like the seminarians, pop culture Christian leaders and the many other pockets of Christian leaders were able to stay in their own separate corners of the platforms. Today, this isn’t the case. Today, all of the different Christian worlds have been thrown together into one big arena.

Since this happened, many of the different Christian worlds have been arguing and fighting with each other. Beth thinks if those separate pockets could find a way to get past their differences, there is a real opportunity for unity for the Church online. And as leaders, maybe that’s something worth aiming for.

3. There is a huge difference between calling and healing

When Beth felt her initial call to ministry, it was immediate and strong. One day, she was headed towards being a lawyer and the next day, she knew she would be working in some kind of ministry serving Jesus for the rest of her life. But, her healing journey to maturity took much longer.

Beth has a lot of wounds from her upbringing that have taken years to heal from. And many of those years took place after her call to ministry. So, for years after she was called, she was still acting out of many of those wounds in sin. The same thing could be true for someone in your life. Maybe someone has received a call to ministry, but are still living with a lot of sin. Give them some grace and know that healing is a journey that takes a lot longer than a calling.

A teacher that is not a student is a talker. A true teacher is a student first. @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet The seeds for success and the seeds for failure live within all of us. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet What I minister out of is the overflow of what's going on in my own relationship with Jesus. @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet I am a train wreck in so many ways, but God called me. I am certain. @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet We are going to fail. And so, can we deal with it? Or did we really think that all of this was based on how good we were instead of the pure grace of God? @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet A person who has repented is going to be humble every time. They're not going to be prideful and entitled. @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet That moment of my calling was like one second it was this way, one second it was that. I'd give anything if my healing had been like that, but it was not. @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet What I'm resolved to is I'm not quitting. @BethMooreLPM Click To Tweet Leading something large is not inherently bad. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet It's way too easy for your platform to outgrow your character. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet It's pretty easy to create a world where no one challenges you. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet You don't want to create a feedback loop where people just tell you things you want to hear. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet If you're winning at work, but you're losing at home, you're losing. @cnieuwhof Click To Tweet
