Ron Martin retiring from 'dream job' at WGAL after more than 37 years

York native Ron Martin is calling it a broadcasting career.

The William Penn High School graduate is retiring from WGAL-TV8 after more than 37 years at the station. His last broadcast will be Nov. 25, PennLive said citing a news release.

Martin called working at WGAL his “dream job. I’ve enjoyed every one of the 37 years I’ve been here,” he said in the release. “But as an anchorman, you work a lot of nights and now it’s time for me to spend more time with my family.”

Martin joined WGAL in 1983 after stints at WSBA radio in York and WHP-TV in Harrisburg. His early days at the Lancaster station were spent working out of first the Harrisburg newsroom and then the York newsroom. He was named a weekend news anchor and moved to weeknights two years later.

A six-time Emmy award winner, Martin has also been recognized over the years for his service to the communities that make up central Pennsylvania. He was inducted into the William Penn Hall of Fame in 2002.

“Ron’s hometown knowledge and experience have guided viewers through countless news stories during his tenure. He is truly a giant of broadcasting in the Susquehanna Valley,” news director Eric Nazarenus said in the release. “On behalf of WGAL 8 station management – thank you, Ron, for your service to the station and the community.”
