Oglala Lakota, Union Counties declared drought disaster in South Dakota

Oglala Lakota and Union counties in South Dakota have been declared primary natural disaster areas because of losses from drought. The declaration, by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Perdue, makes farmers in those counties eligible for USDA and FSA emergency loans. Producers in the West River counties of Bennett, Custer, Fall River, Jackson and Pennington, and the Nebraska counties of Cherry, Dakota, Dawes, Dixon and Sheridan, as well as the East River South Dakota counties of Clay and Lincoln, and the Iowa counties of Plymouth, Sioux and Woodbury, are eligible for the same loans that can be used to replace equipment and livestock or to reorganize some debts. Eligible producers have until June 14 to apply.
