Survey shows organic sales are up

Sales of organic products are up more than 30 percent from 2016, according to a survey by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Data from the 2019 Organic Survey shows that total sales of organic products reached $9.9 billion. There are more than 16,500 certified organic farms, accounting for 5.5 million certified acres.

NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer says the survey shows continued growth of organic production in the US.

Livestock and poultry products, mostly milk and eggs, increased 12 percent, livestock and poultry is up 44 percent, and field crops increased 55 percent.

The survey also asked producers about future production plans. Twenty-nine percent of farms plan to increase their level of organic production and nearly 2,000 certified organic farms have 255,000 acres in the three-year transition period.

California leads the nation in certified organic sales with $3.6 billion followed by Washington at $886 million, Pennsylvania at $742 million, Oregon at $454 million, and Texas at $424 million. Also in the top 10, were Wisconsin with $269 million and Michigan with $231 million in organic sales in 2019.
