2020 harvest much smoother for northwest Minnesota farmer

A northwest Minnesota wheat and soybean farmer is thankful this harvest went a lot better than last year.

Austen Germolus of Borup says 2019 was tough.

“But this year it was relatively smooth. Our wheat harvest was slowed down by moisture. We had water standing in fields, and kind of thought that would carry over into bean harvest. But bean harvest was pretty much ideal.”

He tells Brownfield wheat yields averaged around 65 bushels per-acre and quality was surprisingly good.

“Every time it seemed like we got combining it rained a little bit, so we thought we were going to have problems with falling numbers again. Our falling numbers were actually really good, protein was good, test weight was good. So we can’t complain.”

For soybeans, Germolus says fields planted early fared much better than those that were seeded toward the end of May or early June.
