Indiana coronavirus cases: 1,589 new cases, 23 new deaths reported

Indiana reported 1,589 new cases of the coronavirus Monday and an additional 23 deaths, bringing the state to 149,166 cases and 3,727 deaths since the start of the pandemic. 

The state also updated its online coronavirus dashboard for schools, which it does every Monday. An additional 476 student cases were added to the total, along with 92 new cases in teachers and 119 in staff. About 40% of the cases have occurred in students ages 15 to 19. About 80% have been white students, according to the dashboard.

Out of the schools that have reported, 1,168 have had at least one case. An additional 622 have had no reported cases, and 576 have yet to report. The new numbers bring the state’s totals to 2,843 student cases, 567 teachers and 655 staff cases.

While 11 of the new deaths reported Monday occurred more than a week ago, Friday, which saw 24 deaths, was the deadliest day since early June.

Here are some other statistics of note:

  • How many people in Indiana hospitals with COVID-19: 1,373.
  • Intensive care unit bed availability: 37.6% of 2,228 beds. 17.2% of beds are occupied by COVID patients.
  • Ventilator availability: 79.9% of 2,890.
  • State positivity rates (seven-day average rate as of Oct. 12): For all tests performed, 6.5%. For unique individuals, 11.8%.
  • Average number of deaths a day as of Oct. 12: 16.
  • Regenstrief Institute estimate of how many people are currently infected: 23,343.
  • Counties with more than 50 newly reported cases: Lake (168), Marion (154), St. Joseph (138), Elkhart (90), Allen (61), Vanderburgh (53), Hamilton (52).
  • Counties with more than 20 newly reported cases: Tippecanoe (45), Porter (43), LaPorte (42), Kosciusko (39), Vigo (33), Monroe (32), Delaware (25), Johnson (25), Hendricks (24), Madison (24), Wayne (22), Howard (21), Jasper (20)
  • Counties with a 10% or higher seven-day positivity rate: Steuben, DeKalb, LaGrange, Kosciusko, Elkhart, Wells, Cass, Fountain, Warren, Parke, Blackford, Delaware, Cass, Fayette, Clay, Sullivan, Ohio, Dearborn, Jackson, Daviess, Lawrence.
