Pedestrian struck, killed by car in western South Dakota identified

Authorities have identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed walking across a highway near Maverick Junction Monday afternoon.

Roger Klein, 82, from Hot Springs, died after being struck by a vehicle about one mile west of Maverick Junction on the southeastern edge of the Black Hills on Monday afternoon, according to a news release from the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

The driver of the 2018 Chevy Impala that struck him, 72-year-old Kathryn Flock, from Buffalo Gap, was headed eastbound on U.S. Highway 18 around 1:15 p.m. Monday when she saw Klein walking across the highway, the release states.

Flock swerved to avoid Klein, but struck him with the front passenger side of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Flock was wearing a seat belt and wasn't injured.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
