8 things to do in Evansville area this weekend

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Concerts and theater highlight this week's calendar of things to do. Check out a sampling of what is going on in the area. 

Thursday

Concert featuring RoSco

5:30 p.m., EVPL West

A socially distanced concert experience will be held on the lawn of EVPL West featuring local folk band RoSco. This will be the first in-person program hosted by the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library since March 2020. Those attending the program are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and any refreshments.

Social distancing will be supported with markings for safe seating. RoSco is a local dulcimer duo who play a variety of music from traditional Americana and British Isle, hymns and gospel singalongs and a few modern and classics too.

Friday

Concert on the River

5:30-7 p.m., spectators are asked to sit at Old Lock & Dam Park hill to listen

Concer on the River features the Castle and Boonville high's marching bands.

The Castle High School Marching Knights & Boonville HIgh School Marching Band of Gold will be performing this Concert on the River featuring a jazz ensemble, Castle's 2020 show Broken Symmetry, a variety of solos and ensembles and a tribute to first responders and law enforcement. 

Parking will be available that is wheelchair accessible at Old Lock & Dam as well as at Newburgh Elementary School and the Old Newburgh Presbyterian Church lot where shuttles will be provided.

'Into the Woods'

7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Lincoln Amphitheatre this October

People's Theater of Southern Indiana will bring its inaugural production — Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's classic musical "Into the Woods." It is directed by Evansville native Matthew Herrmann with music direction by Laura Witte.

Into the Woods will have shows Friday and Saturday.

All seating is limited to less than one-fifth of the venue's 1,500, fully covered, outdoor seating area. On site hand sanitizer provided courtesy Monkey Hollow Winery & Distillery and all CDC rules and recommendations will be abided. Per the Governor's executive order, the use of face masks and face coverings will be required to enter the facility and when moving about the mezzanine area to concessions, restrooms, etc. Once in the seating area and social distance is in place, face coverings can be removed if the patron is comfortable doing so. While it is encouraged that all patrons bring their own face covering, masks will be available to purchase.

'Hedwig and the Angry Inch'

8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m. Sunday, Parking lot of STAGEtwo@321

STAGEtwo productions is bring Hedwig and the Angry Inch this weekend.

After a turbulent childhood and a wreck of a marriage, Hedwig is bereft of both family and her identity. Rock music is her solace through a series of misadventures as she stumbles her way to what she was missing all along: herself. A magical mashup of camp humor, punk energy, torch song pathos and a splash of surrealism, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" tells a poignant story of heartbreak, oppression, liberation and resurrection that has connected with audiences from all walks of life.

Please bring a chair as the parking lot is probably too hard for blankets. Social distancing and mask-wearing will be enforced. Actors will also be wearing clear masks.

Saturday

Corpus Christi Healing Gardens Harvest Fest

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Corpus Christi Church, 5528 Hogue Road

This first-ever Corpus Christi Healing Gardens Harvest Fest, celebrates a great harvest of pumpkins and gourds. Buy your Fall decorations and enjoy Corpus Christi Chuckwagon sausage burgers, dozens of baked goods, puppy chow, harvest mix, frozen hot chocolate and apple cider. Enjoy outdoor activities that include hayrides, kids crafts, an apple slingshot, petting area with miniature goats, prayer table, Fall photo opportunities and more.  

All proceeds will benefit the Father Deydier House of Discernment and the various ministries of Corpus Christi Church. CDC COVID-19 standards will apply. 

SMILE Mile

9 a.m. to noon, Vanderburgh 4H Center

The 2020 SMILE Mile looks different this year with the community encouraged to come and line the mile that families will be driving down during the car parade.

The SMILE Mile fundraising and awareness event for SMILE on Down Syndrome is a bit different this year due to COVID-19. This year, it has transitioned from a walking event to a car parade, making it social-distancing friendly for families and the general public. This event is also consolidated with SMILE's Trucks & Heroes event as a number of "Trucks and Heroes" will line the one-mile route to cheer on the caravan.

There is also a half pot drawing and silent auction.

Weed Wrangle

9 a.m. to noon, North Woods at Igleheart Park, 6101 N. First Avenue.

Volunteers are needed. Join the fight against invasive plant species in this event led by invasive species technicians, Will Drews from Knox County and Megan Ritterskamp from Vanderburgh County. Help is needed to preserve the park’s native trees and plants. Meet in the parking lot of Lloyd Pool and bring loppers and gloves (some will be available for use). Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes/boots.

The Reptile and Exotics show is Saturday at the 4h Activities Center.

$5 per person, 4 and under free

A number of vendors will be bringing a large variety of animals as well as feeders, supplies and more to the family-friendly event. Concessions will be available.
