Port St. Lucie man accused of DUI manslaughter, leaving scene of accident involving death

MARTIN COUNTY — A Port St. Lucie man was accused of driving under the influence and then crashing into an 88-year-old Stuart man on a motorcycle, killing him.

Richard McGinnis, 35, of the 2300 block of Southeast Grand Drive in Port St. Lucie, was charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident involving death and vehicular homicide Monday morning.

McGinnis was driving a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica when he crashed into Paul Ryan Nov. 26, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Ryan was driving east on Kanner Highway, or State Road 76, near Cove Road, when he was rear-ended by McGinnis around 2:45 p.m.

Ryan was taken to Cleveland Clinic Martin South Hospital, where he later died, according to the crash report. 

After the crash, McGinnis fled, troopers said. Information was not available Tuesday about how he was found.

Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies investigating the incident determined McGinnis was impaired when the crash happened, according to McGinnis' arrest affidavit. 

McGinnis was taken to the Martin County Jail. He was later released on a $95,000 bond.
