Cranberry crop good, but below yield expectations

A Wisconsin cranberry grower says he doesn’t expect any record-setting yields this year.  Bob Duckert with the Jacob Searles Cranberry Company near Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin tells Brownfield their farm is harvesting for the fresh berry market now. “We’ve been a fresh fruit grower forever. We’ve never, we do some processed but our main goal is to do a fresh bag.”

Duckert tells Brownfield the growers he knows were hoping for better yields. “I think everybody was a little more optimistic than what it’s going to come out to be, but we’re just doing the early varieties first, so things will pick up maybe when we get into some of the older varieties.”

More than 60% of the nation’s cranberries come from Wisconsin, and Duckert says the Town of Cranmoor, where his farm is located, has the highest concentration of cranberry acres in the world.

The berries grown by the Jacob Searles Cranberry Company are washed and packaged at the farm under the Ocean Spray brand, and are distributed to grocers.
