Agronomist reports southern rust

A DEKALB Asgrow technical agronomist says he’s seeing Southern Rust in his territory.

Jordan Arndell is based in southern Indiana.

“Southern rust came in pretty prolifically,” he says.

He tells Brownfield growers should consider fungicide application.

“Using a fungicide will typically help with standability as well as help increase or protect yield we have,” he says. “This year I expect multiple operations to see a really good return on investment on their fungicide application.”

Arndell says for growers on the fence about using fungicide for Southern Rust…“One of the most common statements I hear from people when they don’t want to use fungicide is that it makes the grain wetter,” he says. “I tell those people that you may be a point or two wetter, but sometimes it’s actually a little drier when you spray the fungicide…the fungicide helps protect the plant and keeps that factory going and it’s able to complete its life cycle properly and dry down naturally.”
