Grab N Learn 01

Kindergarten teacher Tarsila Muth, standing, remains at the curbside as she delivers instructional material to a visiting parent during a drive-through Grab-n-Learn distribution at Finegayan Elementary School on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020. Approximately 860 students, ranging from headstart through fifth-grade, are currently enrolled at the Dededo campus, said Principal Marites Garcia.

Students at all Guam Department of Education middle and high schools are eligible to apply for student computers, according to spokeswoman Isa Baza.

Applications will be available at each school by Sept. 24, Baza said.

The devices will be prioritized for students based on need.

"While there is no income level requirement, schools will look at whether a student already has access to devices, internet, a reliable power supply, and whether the student is currently engaged with their classes," Baza said.

Once a student is selected, computers must be picked up and signed out by a parent or guardian unless the student is 18 years of age or older. Families must also agree that the computer will be used strictly for educational purposes.

"We hope that by expanding student access to devices, more students will have the ability to engage with their teachers and classmates online," Baza said. "This in turn will support the department’s distance learning goals and will facilitate teaching and learning despite the temporary school closures due to COVID-19."

To access the applications, parents can call or email schools. Families with multiple students at different schools must apply and obtain a device from each school.

"There is no deadline to apply at this time, however, we encourage parents and families in need of devices to submit their applications as soon as possible," Baza said.

Schools will begin reviewing applications and select students as early as next week. Selected students will be contacted and provided with a schedule to get their computers.
