A man was flown to a Baltimore hospital Tuesday afternoon after he was burned in a house fire on Gearhart Road southeast of Greencastle, according to a Rescue Hose Co. spokesman.

People in the home at 12777 Gearhart Road were cooking when the fire broke out in a kitchen, said 2nd Lt. Joe Sellers.

The man who was flown to the Bayview Medical Center suffered second- and third-degree burns, Sellers said.

Firefighters contained the fire, which was reported at 3:19 p.m., to the kitchen, Sellers said.

It caused about $50,000 in damages.

Sellers said four people in the home were displaced, although he did not know what kind of living arrangements were made for them.

Because it was a working fire, crews were dispatched from Waynesboro, Marion, Mont Alto, Mercersburg, Long Meadow, Leitersburg, Smithsburg and Maugansville. The scene was cleared at 4:49 p.m.
