Lawmakers concerned Canada is not adhering to certain dairy provisions in USMCA

There’s concern among lawmakers that Canada is not adhering to some of the dairy provisions in the U.S. Mexico Canada Agreement.

Minnesota U.S. Senator Tina Smith tells Brownfield she’s working on a bipartisan letter that will ask Ag Secretary Perdue and Trade Ambassador Lighthizer to look into the issue.

“It’s really important that those dairy provisions get enforced correctly, and I’ve been hearing about this from Minnesota dairy farmers and just want people to know I’m paying close attention to that.”

She points out passage of USMCA hinged on the belief it had strong enforcement mechanisms.

“We’re hearing reports that Canada is not living up to the agreement, and of course a trade deal is only as good as the people abiding by it and our enforcement of it. So that’s what we’re going to be asking Secretary Perdue and (Ambassador) Lighthizer to look into.”

Smith is a Democrat and member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
