Here’s 10 Lessons We Learned from Psalms 101-150

1.) We Can Live Forgiven and Free From Past Sin and Shame

As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our sins from us.
(Psalm 103:12)

Freedom in Christ is not the same as the world’s definition of freedom.

The world sees freedom as living independently and doing whatever we want.

But the freedom that comes from Christ is a freedom from the penalty and power of sin over us.

When we repent of our sin, we no longer face the penalty of eternal consequences.  As we believe and trust and follow God – sin loses its power.  Past sinful habits, thoughts and attitudes begin to disappear.  Past worries and fears and guilt and shame dissipate.  As we obey God and his Word, doing what is right becomes easier and easier and love, joy, peace and freedom – true freedom – appears!

Do you want to be free today?  Jesus said, “Repent and believe.” (Mark 1:15). Do this and live free.  Jesus Loves You!!!

2.) We Can Trust God When the Future is Uncertain

I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples;
    I will sing praises to you among the nations.
For your steadfast love is great above the heavens;
    your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!
    Let your glory be over all the earth!
(Psalms 108:3-5)

Though I’ve never lived through a pandemic before, I have lived through uncertainty.  I have had days, that turned into months and now years, where my future has been uncertain because of my husband leaving and moving far away.  But if there is one thing I have learned through trusting God in the dark – it is this…

This world may be uncertain, unstable and always changing but our God is not.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

People are going to disappoint us and let us down.  But God does not change. He is rock solid.  His promises are reliable. His word stands true for eternity and his love endures forever.

We can trust God when the future seems uncertain because God is consistent and constant.  He is the unchanging one.  No matter what happens tomorrow or the next day, he will not change.  His Word was sure a thousand years ago and it will be sure for the next thousand.  And this should give us peace and rest.

3. Do Not Waste Your Life

Their idols are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but do not speak;
    eyes, but do not see.
They have ears, but do not hear;
    noses, but do not smell.
They have hands, but do not feel;
    feet, but do not walk;
    and they do not make a sound in their throat.
Those who make them become like them;
    so do all who trust in them.
(Psalm 115:4-8)

God wants us to enjoy life!

The temptation is that we turn enjoyable and good things in our lives, into little gods and over time we give all of our love and attention and time and energy to good things, rather than keeping God first in our lives.

So here’s the key to enjoying good things without them turning into idols…

Live with a heart of gratitude and thankfulness toward God, for the good things he has given you.

Every good and enjoyable thing we have in life has come as a gift from God and these good things are not the point of life!  God has a greater purpose for you, than to just live life craving after the things of this world.

We were made to worship God and to live with him for all of eternity.  And so that relationship starts now – here on earth.

Don’t waste your life on things that will end at your grave, instead put all of your trust in God.  He loves you!

4. Those Who Follow God’s Word Will Be Blessed

Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord!
(Psalm 119:1)

Blessed.

The Bible says that those who walk in the law of the Lord are blessed.

I know for some they might replace the word blessed with…

boring.

But the one who follows God’s word — knows that this is not the case!

The word blessed also means happy.

Sin is fun for a season – but that fun eventually runs out.  The result of sin is a feeling of separation from God.  And being separated from God – in the end – leads to emptiness, a lack of purpose and an eternity separated from all of God’s goodness.  The enemy lies to us and tells us that God’s way is boring, but we must reject those lies – those who follow God’s word will be blessed.

5.  Those Who Trust In God Will Not Be Moved

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,
    which cannot be moved, but abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
    so the Lord surrounds his people,
    from this time forth and forevermore.
(Psalm 125:1,2)

In Psalm 125:1, those who trust in God are compared to Mount Zion – a mountain that cannot be moved and will last forever.

Then in verse 2, God is compared to the mountains that surround Jerusalem.  It says that he surrounds his people like the mountains surround Jerusalem.

If you feel surrounded by problems and difficulties, I want you to reread verse 2 and put your name in it. “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds (insert your name) from this time forth and forevermore.”

God is not just beside you, but he goes before you and behind you – he surrounds you.  He is with you always! And even when everything is falling apart, you can trust in him and keep going.

I know how sometimes it can feel like he is absent but our feelings can be misleading.  God says he is with us – and so we must trust God’s word, that what he promises is true.  God is with us!

6. Do Not Let Your Past Hold You Back

If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared.
(Psalm 130:3,4)

We are flawed and verse 3 says, if the Lord kept track of all of our sins – who could stand before him?  The answer is – none of us.

But thanks be to God, he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and when we bow our knee in humility to God and repent of our sin – we are forgiven. When we die we will not face judgement but instead he will welcome us into heaven as his child.

What is holding you back?

If it is a sin in your life – repent today.  Jesus will forgive you of every sin you ever committed and ever will commit.

I personally have given God a lot to forgive.  But 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Satan does not want us to believe that we can be forgiven.

He wants us to stay stuck in habitual sin.

He wants to hound us about our past with regret and sorrow and pain and guilt and shame.

If the enemy is doing that to you today – sit down and write out Psalm 130.  Speak to the enemies lies with truth- you are forgiven – period.  And when forgiveness is properly received, verse 4 tells us that God is feared.  There is a deep reverence for God, as we thank him for his mercy and grace.

7.) We Are Stronger Together

How good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity!
(Psalm 133:1)

Every time we obey one of God’s commands, there is a joy benefit.   Psalm 133 says it is both good and pleasant when we are unified.  Wouldn’t 2020 be sweeter if we the church was really working hard to love one another above all else and unified as a result.

We need these difficult times to bring us together – not pull us apart.

We need each other.

We are stronger together.

Stand up church and be strong.

8. You Can’t Hide From God

God knows your habits.

Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
(Psalm 139:1-2)

God understands your life.  He is totally familiar with your habits.  He knows when you sit down and when you stand up.

God knows your thoughts.

You discern my thoughts from afar.
(Psalm 139:2)

Even if you don’t say a word, God knows what you are thinking.  He knows your good thoughts and the bad ones. He knows your personality, emotions, strengths and weaknesses.  Nothing is hidden from God.

God knows your location.

You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
(Psalm 139:3)

God is like a GPS – he knows your location.  He knows when you are gone from home and driving somewhere and he knows when you are home and asleep.  He is acquainted with all of your ways.

God knows your words.

Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
(Psalm 139:4)

God knows what you are going to say before you even say it.  He knows the intent of your heart.  Consider, if God walked into the room today, would you change the way you talk?  God is always in the room with you.

God knows your past, present and future.

You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
(Psalm 139:5)

God goes behind you.  He knows your past. God goes before you. He knows your future. And his hand is upon you now. He is with you in the present.  God is always with us guarding us and protecting us.  We can rest easy at night knowing that our future is in God’s hands.

Our God is an AWE-some God!

9.  We Must Follow God Instead of Our Emotions

For the enemy has pursued my soul;
he has crushed my life to the ground;
he has made me sit in darkness like those long dead.
Therefore my spirit faints within me;
my heart within me is appalled.
(Psalm 143:3-4)

David’s Emotions Were Dominating His Life

1.) David was suffering from an inner attack.  He says the enemy had pursued his soul. When David says soul – he is referring to his inner emotions. He was being attacked emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.

2.) David felt crushed to the ground.  His inner turmoil had made him totally miserable.

3.) David was sitting in darkness.  His thoughts were dark.

4.) David’s was overwhelmed and distressed.

David was not okay.

Have you been there?

Get off the rollercoaster ride of emotions and go to God and say – I need you!  Don’t be all religious and stiff with God.  He loves you and he sent his son to die on the cross for your sins so you can have a relationship with him.  We don’t have to pray “churchy” prayers to please him.  Like David, we can cry out to him and tell him everything we honestly feel.

Be like David and follow God instead of your emotions.

Final Conclusion:

10.  Praise His name forever!

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!
(Psalm 150:6)

The Psalmist calls on all of creation to praise the name of the Lord.  He calls on the angels, sun, moon, stars, waters, sea creatures, fire, hail, snow, wind, mountains, trees, livestock, birds and more to praise him.  Then he calls on all the people of the earth, both the princes and the young children, to praise the Lord.

Our praise to the Lord must not be silent.

God is the giver of every breath, so it is only appropriate that the creation praises the creator.

Our God is good, gracious, forgiving and full of mercy.

He is our refuge and strength and always near to us when we call on his name.

His steadfast love endures and because of his faithfulness and our salvation, we can give thanks to Him and praise His name forever!

And so, one last time, as we finish the book of Psalms, I encourage you today to praise the Lord!

Keep Walking with the King,

  1. Thank you for allowing God to use you for His glory and also for reminding us that God is good and He’s always with us everywhere and always. Am so blessed.

    God bless you.

  2. Thank you, Courtney, for always working so hard on these Bible studies! You’re amazing! Psalms is probably one of my favorite books in the Bible because it’s songs written out. I am our church pianist and I sing, so I love fo praise the Lord through my music! I also teach piano and feel like it’s what God created me to do. Every spring we have a recital and I always put a verse from Psalms on my program. Thank you for reminding us that we always need to praise the Lord everyday! Have a great weekend!

  3. Oh how I have enjoyed our study of Psalms! Going to the study first thing in the morning has been such a blessing in my life. I’m becoming more confident to start sharing – I so appreciate reading what the other woman share. Thank you everyone for your insights and thank you Courtney for making this study possible. I will continue to walk with the King ????.

  4. I looked back over my journal and all the things I wrote for the past 50 days. What came to mind to describe these 50 chapters is my favorite hymn and one very well known, Amazing Grace. The words so aptly describe our journey from the depths of sin to salvation. Then, onto the journey of the ups and downs of life. And all through this journey the hymn describes God’s grace, security, rescue, salvation, and love. And the once sinning wretch is now singing praises all day long to our amazing God. And I love that it says “when we’ve been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise then when we’d first begun!”

  5. Thanks for an amazing walk through Psalms 101-150. I loved really digging deep. This study was a big encouragement and a reminder that God loves us unconditionally. This alone should encourage us to praise Him with fervour and be in awe of His majesty. Looking forward to the fall study! ????????

  6. Hooray, we did it! I finished yesterday, an eager study beaver. 😉 Now I’ll go back to SOAP Matthew, on my way through the gospels during breaks here. (I plan to fill in gaps where I missed the studies as they originally ran.)

    I’m going to order the 2 Corinthians study book next week – I’ve been trying to do an Amazon order only once a week (and I’ve already done this week’s), so I have a chance to avoid impulse buying, and maybe get less packaging materials if things can go out together. Woo hoo for another study journal!

    God bless!
