The passenger limit on Milwaukee County Transit System buses will increase from 10 to 15 on Friday.

The passenger limit on Milwaukee County Transit System buses will increase from 10 to 15 on Friday, the transit system announced.

The increase was "due to high mask usage on buses and other efforts to mitigate risks associated with the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic," according to an MCTS statement Thursday.

Starting Aug. 1, face masks were required on MCTS buses to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

"Now that the majority of passengers are doing their part by wearing masks, MCTS is able to slightly increase the number of passengers permitted on each bus — while still allowing enough space for social distancing," the MCTS statement said.

The bus system will continue to provide one free mask per customer while supplies last and has made hand sanitizer available on "a number of buses."

MCTS is asking passengers to stagger their seating to stay at a distance from others, limit conversations, stay home when sick, use contactless methods to pay the fare, and more.

Passengers enter buses through the front door and leave through the rear door.
