LANSING — The total number of shootings in 2020 in Lansing has more than doubled since last year, surpassing a year's worth of shootings in seven months.

Just this month, six people were injured in shootings and two were killed. That's more than a quarter of the year's shooting injuries crammed into two weeks.

Lansing Police Chief Daryl Green said in late July that LPD was seeing "considerably higher" numbers of shots fired calls than the department was last year.

LPD counts a confirmed shooting as any time officers find evidence at a scene, whether that be a witness who saw a gun, shell casings or property damage from bullet holes.

From January through July, LPD had 236 confirmed shootings, including 29 that resulted in injuries, six homicides and one incident where a LPD officer fatally shot a man.

In that same time frame in 2019, LPD reported 112 confirmed shootings. That includes 19 shootings with injuries and three homicides.

Green said at the start of 2020, just five months into his tenure as chief, the increase was because of an emphasis on corroborating shots fired calls.

"I'm keenly aware of the community's concern for violent crime, it's certainly one of our highest priorities," Green said in January.

In 2019, Lansing saw 181 confirmed shootings, including 43 with injuries or deaths. That's an increase from 2017 and 2018, as well, when there were 115 and 113 shootings, respectively.
