Consumers will pay for cage-free, whether they want to or not

United Egg Producers president Chad Gregory says consumers will pay more for cage-free eggs whether they want to or not.

“If through state law or through customer requirements we are forced to go cage-free over the next five years, ten years or whatever, ultimately the consumer will have to pay for this.”

He says that’s because margins are razor thin, and have been for more than three decades.

Gregory suggests most consumers don’t want to pay more to get cage-free eggs.

“It is such a strange conundrum that we’re in over the next four to five years about the consumer (not) wanting (cage-free), the consumer choosing to go to a different store to buy their eggs. And yet at the same time, through state law (or) customer requirements, we’re being forced to go that direction.”

Gregory made these comments during a webinar Wednesday that was part of the Midwest Poultry Federation’s virtual convention.
