A collision between a Metrolink train and a pickup truck in Oxnard Friday night left the driver of the truck seriously injured, officials said.

The incident was reported shortly after 8:30 p.m. near the railroad crossing at Del Norte Boulevard and Fifth Street, the Oxnard Police Department reported.

A 55-year-old Oxnard man was driving a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck southbound on Del Norte. As he drove through the crossing, he turned right onto the westbound railroad tracks where his truck became stuck, authorities said.

A westbound Metrolink train tried to stop as it approached the intersection but wasn't able to stop in time, officials said. The impact sent the severely damaged truck into a canal adjacent to the tracks, video footage posted on social media showed. Firefighters extricated the man from the wreckage.

The driver suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center in critical condition, according to police. He was later listed in stable condition, authorities said. The driver was the only person in the truck.

No one on the train was hurt. The train continued on to the Oxnard Transit Center after authorities completed their investigation.

Investigators don't yet know whether alcohol or drugs may have been a factor. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact Senior Officer Paul Knapp at 805-385-7750 or at paul.knapp@oxnardpd.org.
