No major injuries were reported after a second-alarm fire tore through a rural Heidelberg Township home Friday afternoon on the 900 block of Hill Top Drive, according to fire officials.

Porters Fire Company First Assistant Fire Chief Chris Walker said that firefighters were called to the scene around 3:50 p.m. after a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the home. The neighbor kicked in the front door when they saw the smoke, and found fire in the kitchen of the home, Walker said.

The neighbor then ran back to their house to get a fire extinguisher, Walker said, but upon returning to the home found that the fire had extended through the house.

The only minor injury from the blaze was one firefighter, who was treated for heat exhaustion on scene and released, according to Walker. No one was in the house when the fire broke out, and a pet dog made it out of the fire, he said.

Two adults were being assisted by the Red Cross for displacement, according to Walker. The home was a total loss, he said.

A firefighter evacuates the roof as fire rips through it during a second alarm house fire on the 900 block of Hill Top Drive, Friday, Aug. 7, 2020, in Heidelberg Township. No one was home at the time of the fire, said Porters Assistant Fire Chief Chris Walker, and the fire was spotted by a neighbor.

Firefighters were seen rescuing numerous personal belongings from the house, including a vintage juke box and a folded American flag.

About 75 firefighters and around 30 different fire apparatus responded to the second-alarm fire, Walker said, which included a tanker task force due to the rural area not having hydrants.

According to Walker, the cause of the fire was unclear, and a PA State Police Fire Marshal is coming to investigate Saturday morning.
