Ventura County added 111 new cases and seven new deaths attributed to COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the county totals up to 8,146 cases and 89 deaths respectively, according to public health data.

Although the seven deaths were all reported Friday, the fatalities occurred between July 23 and Aug. 3, according to county spokeswoman Ashley Bautista. She said deaths are not reported among fatal COVID-19 cases until after the final death certificate has been registered.

The seven residents who died while infected with coronavirus, which causes the disease COVID-19, were a 68-year-old woman, a 77-year-old woman, an 81-year-old man, two 83-year-old women, an 87-year-old man and a 92-year-old man. All seven victims had coexisting health problems when they died with the virus, according to county officials.

Among the 111 new cases reported Friday, 52 had a lab collection date at least one week old. The county added test results from 956 new people Friday, bringing the total number of residents tested to 119,918 in a county with an estimated population of 854,000 people.

There have been 4,568 people to test positive for the virus who have since recovered, while 3,489 remain under active quarantine. The number of COVID-19 patients in local hospitals and intensive care units both decreased Friday. Hospitalizations dropped from 85 on Thursday to 79 on Friday, while ICU cases decreased from 26 to 22.

Public health officials tracking the spread of the virus have found 17 cases were caused during travel, 2,348 were acquired through contact with another infected person, 1,988 were transmitted in the community and 3,793 are under investigation.

California state officials continue to work on technical issues which have caused a backlog in COVID-19 test results using the state's reporting system, CalREDIE. All reporting figures are preliminary until the issues are resolved.
