A warning sign about flooding on Riata Road.

Recent rains and flooding have barraged the Tularosa Basin, leaving the Tularosa Water system overburdened.

The village of Tularosa warned area water users that treating the water so that it is safe to consume had become difficult due to the water system.

"Our water tanks are critically low, therefore, no outside water is permitted," a notice on the village of Tularosa website states. The notice was also posted the Tularosa Facebook page.

Water users were asked to abstain from watering lawns and gardens until further notice. The order would be enforced via fines, the notice states.

The village also asked its water users to use as little water as possible for consumption until advised otherwise.

Calls to Tularosa Mayor Margaret Trujillo requesting further information about the water situation went unanswered.
