Small grains and alfalfa harvest advance in Minnesota

The harvest of small grains and alfalfa continued across Minnesota last week.

The latest crop progress report from USDA shows the spring wheat harvest at seven percent complete.  Oats are 40 percent harvested, and barley harvest is 16 percent done.

The second cutting of alfalfa hay is 87 percent complete, one day ahead of last year but four days behind the five-year average.

For corn, 37 percent is at the dough stage or beyond, and 85 percent is rated in good to excellent condition.

Soybeans setting pods reached 74 percent, with 84 percent of the crop considered good to excellent.

And the condition of sugarbeets improved slightly on the week to 93 percent good to excellent.
