A Sioux Falls man faces several criminal charges after police say he broke into a home over the weekend and tried escaping arrest.

Police responded to a burglary around 9 p.m. on Friday on the 900 block of North Walts Avenue where the suspect reportedly tried breaking into a residence with a skateboard and breaking a window while four people were inside, police spokesman Sam Clemens said.

Police found the suspect around 5 p.m. on Sunday on the 800 block of South Highline Place. The suspect, Jamey Roger Gayken, 26, from Sioux Falls, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his ex-girlfriend, Clemens said. Someone reported the vehicle to police because the woman was driving around the lot and parking in different spots every so often, Clemens said.

When officers arrived on scene, Gayken gave them a fake name, for which he was placed under arrest, Clemens said.

Once police had him in handcuffs in a patrol vehicle, Gayken tried burning through his seat belt with a lighter, Clemens said.

Officers removed Gayken from the vehicle after he asked for his handcuffs to be adjusted because they were too tight. When an officer obliged, Gayken ran away from police, crossing Highway 11 until he was caught in the median, Clemens said.

Gayken was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, escape, false impersonation, fleeing police, resisting arrest, obstruction and intentional damage to property. He was also arrested on four counts of simple assault, first-degree burglary and protection order violation regarding the Friday night burglary, Clemens said.

The women in the vehicle was not injured and was arrested on a probation violation, Clemens said.

Clemens did not know why she was driving to different parking spots in the lot.
