A Sioux Falls man was left with life-threatening injuries after another man hit him with a bat Saturday night, police say.

Officers responded to a report of an assault around 10 p.m. on the 3100 block of East 11th Street, police spokesman Sam Clemens said. A man reportedly got out of a vehicle near a group of men, pulled out a bat and swung it at one of the men. The suspect missed his intended victim, Clemens said, and instead struck another man in the head.

The 54-year-old Sioux Falls man was taken to the hospital by his friends, Clemens said. He originally suffered life-threatening injuries, but he was able to communicate with police about the incident, Clemens said.

Clemens did not have an update on the victim's condition.

Neither of the victims knew the suspect, Clemens said. The suspect was described as a white man about 6-foot-3 in height and riding in a gray car, he said.
