Carlsbad man suspected of homicide in New Mexico, faces assault charges in Texas

A Carlsbad man accused of killing his wife in Carlsbad is now facing charges in both New Mexico and Texas after law enforcement officials said he fled the scene. 

Bernardo Fernandez may face a charge of open count of homicide in the death of his 48-year-old wife whose body police found while investigating a domestic disturbance call in the 4100 block of South Thomason Road Saturday at 5:06 p.m., according to a news release from the Carlsbad Police Department. Investigators believe he was the cause of the "severe head injuries" noted on her body.

The name of Fernandez's wife was not released to the media. The manner and cause of her death was also not released.

In the interim, Fernandez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, after he allegedly fired a gun at Reeves County deputy who attempted to apprehend him in Pecos, Texas.

Fernandez was struck by gunfire, taken to a local hospital and treated. 

The incident was being investigated by the Reeves County Sheriff Office’s and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), said Sgt. Oscar Villareal, DPS spokesperson.

Villareal did not have additional details about the incident.
