Presidential Debates Moved Again

We’re about three months away from Early Voting in New York. So lets check the Schedule for the General Election Debates.

As a reminder, the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) is Sponsoring Three Presidential Debates and One Vice Presidential Debate this Fall.

The CPD is a Non-Profit Organization that Sponsors, Organizes, and Establishes Guidelines, for General Election Debates. It was Founded in 1987 by Paul Kirk (D) and Frank Fahrenkopf (R) who, at the time, were Chairmen of their Party's National Committees.

The CPD has Sponsored Three Presidential Debates and One Vice Presidential Debate Prior to each Presidential Election since 2000 and has Sponsored every Debate since 1988.

The Debates have only been between Democrats and Republicans since 1987, except in 1992, when the CPD allowed Reform Party Candidate, Ross Perot, to Participate in All Three Presidential Debates, even though his Candidacy had never Received Support from more than 7% of Respondents in Public Opinion Surveys prior to the Debates. At the time, the CPD did Not have a Rule Automatically Excluding a Candidate for Low Poll Numbers. But Starting in 2000 the test was under 15%.

Like the rest of this Election Cycle, the Debate Schedule has been Adjusted due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

This week, on July 27th, the University of Notre Dame Withdrew from Hosting the First Presidential Debate. University of Notre Dame President, Rev. John Jenkins, said in a Statement, "the constraints the coronavirus pandemic put on the event — as understandable and necessary as they are — have led us to withdraw.”

That day, the CPD announced that Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland will Co-Host the First Debate, which is scheduled for September 29th.

On June 23rd, the CPD announced that the Second Presidential Debate was Moved from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami. That Debate will take place on October 15th.

The Third Presidential Debate is still being held on October 22th at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

The only Vice Presidential Debate will still take place on October 7th, 2020, at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
