Coronavirus update Friday: 153 new cases, no new deaths

The number of positive coronavirus cases rose by 153 on Friday, bringing the total in Ventura County to 4,246 cases, according to public health data.

No additional deaths were reported Friday, leaving the death toll at 53 victims. The most recent deaths attributed to coronavirus were reported Thursday in a 96-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man, both of whom had underlying health problems.

Among nonfatal cases, 2,299 have recovered from the virus, with 2,495 remaining under active quarantine, according to county data. The county had 74 hospitalized cases Friday, with 29 cases in intensive care units.

As of Friday, Ventura County has tested 78,753 people for coronavirus at least once, roughly 9% of the county's estimated population of 850,000.

Public health officials tracking the spread of the virus have found 17 were caused during travel, 1,357 were acquired through contact with another infected person, 1,291 were transmitted in the community and 1,581 are under ongoing investigation.

Age, location of local COVID-19 cases

Oxnard had the highest number of confirmed cases with 1,518 residents testing positive as of Friday. Simi Valley had the next highest number, with 711 infections detected. The two cities account for approximately half of all cases in the county.

The number of cases confirmed since early March in communities around Ventura County, including any day-over-day changes, was this:

  • Oxnard, 1,518 total cases (+59 new cases Friday)
  • Simi Valley, 711 (+15)
  • Thousand Oaks, 422, including 146 in Newbury Park (+16)
  • Santa Paula, 289, (+6)
  • Fillmore, 258 (+6)
  • Moorpark, 196 (+2)
  • Camarillo, 176 (+10)
  • Port Hueneme, 91 (+8)
  • Piru, 72 (+1)
  • Oak Park, 39 (+2)
  • Ojai, 28 (+1)
  • Somis, 24 (no change)
  • Oak View, 13 (no change)

The virus has been found in 2,226 men and 2,018 women in the county. Among residents age 65 and older, the demographic deemed most at risk of fatal complications, there have been 221 men and 204 women who tested positive.

Among residents between ages 45 and 64, 586 men and 570 women have tested positive. For residents between ages 25 and 44, 872 men and 710 women have tested positive.

Among young adults between ages 18 and 24, 337 men and 314 women have tested positive. There have been 423 juveniles to test positive for the virus, 206 male and 217 female. The ages of three female cases and four male cases were unknown as of Friday.
