Amtrak offers buy-one, get-one promotion on its sleeper trains amid COVID-19 — with a catch

Amtrak wants you to have sweet dreams the next time you travel — so much so that it's sweetening the deal on its sleeper "roomettes."

The rail service is offering a buy-one-get-one-free discount this summer for its roomette accommodation, meaning when one person books a roomette they can have their second ticket free. A roomette includes two seats that convert into beds, with a large window, fresh towels and linens and access to a private bathroom and shower in the car. 

Plus: "A dedicated sleeping car attendant provides turndown service, assists with meals, helps with luggage and shares great stories of life on the rails," according to a news release provided by Amtrak spokesperson Olivia Irwin. "All customers in private rooms receive complimentary lounge access at major stations, priority boarding and complimentary meals onboard."

As always, though, study the fine print before booking. The offer only lasts for a limited time, between July 7 through July 17, for travel beginning July 13 through Sept. 30.

There are also other caveats. The deal is subject to availability and isn't available on the Auto Train (the train where you bring your vehicle along for the ride). You must also book at least three days in advance, and you can't combine this with other discounts. Cancelation fees apply depending on how close you cancel to the booking date. Read up on the rest of the terms and conditions here.

• Washington, D.C. to Chicago for $319
• Atlanta to New Orleans for $243

Roomettes are available across the country on these lines: California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder, Lake Shore Limited, Silver Service, Southwest Chief, Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle.

What's different on board 

If you haven't taken an Amtrak train during the coronavirus pandemic, expect some changes during the booking process and boarding.

Amtrak is waiving change and cancellation fees for reservations made by Aug. 31. It's also limiting ticket sales to maintain social distance between passengers.

Amtrak has enhanced the cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and high-touch areas on trains and in stations. It has installed clear protective barriers at stations to reduce contact between passengers and employees.

Passengers are required to wear face coverings on trains and in stations, except in private rooms. They're encouraged to arrive 30 minutes before scheduled departure time to prevent crowding.

All non-safety related materials have been removed from seatback pockets, and passengers can open doors between train cars with their feet.

Food service is carry-out only. Dining and lounge is available on certain long distance routes with physical distancing protocols. Plastic barriers have been installed at cafe counters, and physical distancing markers and signs have been added. Amtrak is only accepting cashless payments.
