Illinois sets dates for junior livestock, horse shows

The Illinois Department of Ag is hosting junior livestock and horse shows in place of the state fair and Du Quoin State Fair.

The Junior Livestock Expo will be held in Springfield on two separate weekends; September 11th through the 13th will host beef, sheep, dairy goats, pygmy goats and rabbits while September 18th to the 20th will host swine dairy cattle, and meat goats.

The horse shows will be held on the Du Quoin State Fair grounds with English showing August 29th and 30th and Western showing on September 5th and 6th.

IDOA said although there will not be the standard volume of fairgoers, the shows will present a challenge due to COVID-19. Illinois Director of Ag Jerry Costello says the IDOA is working with the Illinois Department of Public Health to set safety measures for the shows.

Costello says IDOA realizes how much work Illinois’ youth put into their fair projects and wanted to “ensure they had a place to show that off.”

The shows are limited to Illinois residents between the ages of eight and 21.

Entry fees for the shows are:

  • $20 Beef
  • $15 Dairy cattle
  • $15 Swine
  • $15 Sheep
  • $15 Goats
  • $1 Rabbits
  • $1 Poultry
  • $10 for participants in the horse show
