Virgia E. Gates, 92, of Springfield, IL and formerly of Pleasant Hill, passed away Friday morning (7-3-20) at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Virgia was born August 3, 1927 in Bunker, MO, a daughter of Charley D. and Bessie K. Dotson Prater. She married John Luther “Barney” Gates on August 28, 1946 in Pittsfield and he preceded her in death on December 15, 1993.
Virgia was a homemaker and a long- time member of the Mozier Church of Christ. She enjoyed all types of sewing, crocheting and needle point. She also enjoyed volunteering at the nursing home. Most important to her was taking care of her grandchildren.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Dianna (Don) Long of Thompson, IA, Richard (Meri) Jones of Jacksonville and Jackie (Bryan) Nicoll of Springfield, fourteen great grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Kathy Gates of Springfield, three sisters, Lucille Anderson of Pleasant Hill, Mary Ann (Don) Shireman of Pittsfield and Doris (Dennis) Johnson of Pittsfield, two brothers, Allen (Bonnie) Prater of rural Nebo and Robert (Carol) Prater of rural Pleasant Hill and numerous nieces and nephews.
Virgia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Janet Kay Smith, a son, Johnny Ray Gates, a granddaughter, Dawn Michelle Allen, three sisters, Gladys Reeves, Betty Ripley and Velma Weir and by three brothers, Glenn Prater, Vernon Prater and Charles Prater.
Funeral services will be held Thursday (7-9-20) at 11:00 a.m. at the Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill. Burial will follow at the Perry Wells Cemetery near Pleasant Hill. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services.
Memorials may be made to the Mozier Church of Christ.
