Cincinnati Reds will begin the 2020 season on July 24 at home against the Detroit Tigers

There are a lot of changes in the abbreviated 2020 Major League Baseball season, whether it's the number of games, a universal designated hitter or all the social distancing protocols.

But one thing that will remain the same is the Cincinnati Reds beginning the season at home. The Reds will face the Detroit Tigers at 6:10 p.m. on July 24 at Great American Ball Park to open their 60-game schedule, which will be televised on MLB Network.

There may not be the typical Opening Day fanfare, especially without fans attending games at the start of the season, but the starting line is finally set for a mad dash of a season.

"I think seeing the schedule makes it a little more real," Reds manager David Bell said. "We can all start to plan a little bit better, have an idea of what our life is going to be like and where we're going to be for the next several months."

During the 2020 season, the Reds will play 40 games against National League Central teams (10 vs. Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals). They will play 20 games versus American League Central teams, including six against the Tigers.

The Reds will play their first 17 games without a scheduled off day, but travel will be easier on teams because of a regionalized schedule.

In a season where each game will be magnified – 60 games is just 37% of a typical 162-game regular season – the Reds had a fortunate draw to play the Tigers in six of their first 10 games. The Tigers had the worst record (47-114) in the Majors last year and remain in clear rebuilding mode.

It'll be a lot of familiar faces for Nick Castellanos, who spent his first seven seasons in Detroit. He was traded to the Cubs for the final two months of the 2019 season, then signed a four-year, $64 million contract with the Reds in January.

The Reds will play seven of their 10 games against the Cubs and the Pirates at Great American Ball Park. Seven of their 10 games against the Brewers and Cardinals will be on the road.

Their longest road trip is 10 games, from Aug. 18-27, through Kansas City, St. Louis and Milwaukee.

The Reds will have a nine-game homestand from Sept. 14-23 against the Pirates, Chicago White Sox and Brewers, before ending the regular season with a three-game road series against the Minnesota Twins.

The MLB season will begin on July 23 with two games: the New York Yankees vs. the Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers. All other teams will begin on July 24.
