A motorcyclist crashed in the southbound lanes of I-29 just north of the Tea exit around 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

One person died and another person was injured in a fatal motorcycle crash on Interstate 29 Sunday afternoon, authorities say.

The crash happened in the southbound lanes of I-29 just north of the Tea exit at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. No other vehicles were involved, said South Dakota Department of Public Safety spokesman Tony Mangan.

A 2001 Harley Davidson, pulling a motorcycle trailer, was headed eastbound when the motorcycle's rear tire blew, causing the driver to lose control, Mangan stated in a press release Monday.

The driver and passenger were thrown from the motorcycle when it crashed. Both were taken by ambulance to a Sioux Falls hospital, where the driver, a 54-year-old man, eventually died from his injuries.

The passenger, a 46-year-old woman, has serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Neither person was wearing a helmet, Mangan stated.

Names of those involved are not being released, pending notification of family.

The crash backed up southbound traffic on both I-29 and I-229 for more than an hour Sunday evening. Traffic was reduced to one lane around the crash scene while authorities were investigating.

South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
