NBA free agents 2020: Ranking the top 20 most intriguing players who could be available

In normal times – remember those? – the NBA would be immersed in free agency right now, talking about which players were signing with which teams.

NBA free agency was supposed to begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Instead, we’re talking about resuming the season in a bubble-like environment at a Disney sports complex near Orlando, Florida.

However, when the season ends in early autumn, free agency begins shortly after on Oct. 18.

The salary cap isn’t expected to increase much, if there’s an increase at all, and not many teams have the kind of salary cap space to spend big money. Still, there’s notable names that could be available.

The Detroit Pistons will be about $30 million below the salary cap.

Let’s take a look at the list of the most intriguing potential free agents in October:

Anthony Davis, Los Angeles Lakers (player option): This is his chance for the All-Star to sign a long-term max deal and secure his future.

Anthony Davis could become a free agent after the season.

DeMar DeRozan, San Antonio (player option): It’s difficult to imagine DeRozan passing up the 27.7 million on the final year of his contract.

Fred Van Vleet, Toronto (unrestricted): The Raptors guard is such a solid performer, putting himself in place for a big raise – either from the Raptors or another team.

Joe Harris, Brooklyn (unrestricted): Coming off a two-year, $16 million deal, Harris, who is more than a three-point shooter, is a coveted wing in free agency.

Montrezl Harrell, Los Angeles Clippers (unrestricted): The Clippers signed Harrell to a steal of a deal two summers ago at two year, $12 million. It will take a lot more than that to keep one of the league’s best sixth men.

Brandon Ingram, New Orleans (restricted): Given the season Ingram had (he’s a legit most improved candidate), it would be a surprise if Ingram signed an offer sheet and the Pelicans declined to match.

Paul Millsap, Denver (unrestricted): Did Millsap enjoy his time in Denver to sign a team friendly contract following his three-year, $90 million deal?

Gordon Hayward, Boston (player option): Like other players in similar situations, it’s difficult to see Hayward declining the $34.1 million he’s expected to make next season.

Davis Bertans, Washington (unrestricted): Though the Wizards wanted to sign Bertans, there will be other teams interested in three-point shooting ace.

Danilo Gallinari, Oklahoma City (unrestricted): At 31 years old, Gallinari put together strong back-to-back seasons, especially from three-point range.

Tristan Thompson, Cleveland (unrestricted): If a team is looking for a defensive-minded rebounder who is efficient enough at the rim on offense, Thompson will be available.

Derrick Favors, New Orleans (unrestricted): Reliable on offense and defense, Favors will have interest, including from the Pelicans who will have to decide what they want to do with their logjam in the frontcourt.

Bogdan Bogdanovic, Sacramento (restricted): Another player who is sought after because of his shooting, Bogdanovic was the subject of trade rumors earlier this season, but the Kings want to keep him.

Evan Fournier, Orlando (player option): Fournier could opt out and in a normal offseason, he might. But not many teams have the cap space to offer the deal Fournier might be seeking.

Christian Wood, Detroit (unrestricted): In Detroit’s final 17 games before the season was suspended, Wood averaged 21.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and shot 55.9 percent from the field and 40.6 percent on threes.

DeMarcus Cousins (unrestricted): Injuries, including an Achilles rupture, have sidelined Cousins for basically the past three seasons, but he remains an intriguing possibility for some teams.

Jeff Teague, Atlanta (unrestricted): At this point in his career, Teague could give a contending team quality depth in the backcourt.

Avery Bradley, Los Angeles Lakers (player option): Bradley played well as a starter with the Lakers and knows his role. Will there be a market for him beyond $5 million he’s scheduled to make next season?

Marcus Morris, Los Angeles Clippers (unrestricted): In 12 games with the Clippers, he fit in offensively. But he’s a quality player who can help most teams. His future with the Clippers could be determined in the playoffs.

Goran Dragic, Miami (unrestricted): Like Teague, Dragic can provide excellent backcourt depth, and if the price is right for both parties, he could end up staying with Miami.
