Melissa A. Guthrie, 96, of Pleasant Hill, IL passed away Sunday evening (6-21-20) at Liberty Village in Pittsfield.
Melissa was born October 21, 1923 in Calhoun County, IL, a daughter of Charles and Azubah Fuller Burge. She married Neal Guthrie, Jr. on May 1, 1948 in Palmyra, Mo and Neal died April 25, 1994.
Melissa was a homemaker and farm wife. In earlier years, she was employed by the Brown Shoe Factory in Pittsfield and later by Bob’s Red Fox in Pleasant Hill. She enjoyed sewing, working in her yard and gardening. Melissa was an avid reader and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Most important was the time spent with her grandchildren.
Melissa was a member of the Pleasant Hill American Legion Auxiliary and was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda (Jerry) Cress of rural Nebo and Karen (Larry) Mooney of rural Pleasant Hill, four grandchildren, Jill (Tony) Taylor of rural Nebo, Jennifer (Ben) VanDyne of rural Hamburg, Melissa Mooney of rural Pleasant Hill and Matthew Mooney of Chico, CA, five great grandchildren, Bowman and Ava Taylor, Amber Koetters, and Tyler and Brody VanDyne, and two sisters, Velma Goewey of Bloomington and Anna Lee Walker of Rogers, AR.
Melissa was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Ray Burge.
Graveside services will be held Thursday (6-25-20) at 10:00 a.m. at Crescent Heights Cemetery in Pleasant Hill conducted by Pastor Don Hannel. There is no visitation, however friends are invited to the graveside service with the necessary COVID 19 precautions observed.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill or to the Crescent Heights Cemetery Association.
