Kroger: Earn 4x Fuel Points On 3rd Party Gift Cards; Fixed-Value Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

51

Kroger has returned with more digital coupons offering 4x fuel points on third party gift cards and fixed-value Visa and Mastercard gift cards. This is valid for online gift card purchases as well, with no coupon needed. This offer will be valid through April 23rd, 2024.

Note that the terms on this promo now state that Amazon gift cards are excluded from earning  4x. You’ll still earn 2x fuel points (which is the normal rate).

Quick Thoughts

When buying third party gift cards, earning 4x fuel points means you can save up to 14% on gas. To give an example of how that 14% figure is calculated, let’s say you spend $250 on gift cards during the promotion. That would earn you 1,000 fuel points which can be redeemed for $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons. If you’re able to refuel to that 35 gallon limit (perhaps with either a large gas tank or refueling 2+ household vehicles at the same time), you’d save $35. Saving $35 based on that original $250 of gift card spend works out to be a 14% discount.

If your gas tank is smaller though, your savings won’t be as high as that. For example, our car takes – at most – 12 gallons, so we can barely save 5% on gas through these kinds of promotions based on what we spend on gift cards. You can often get better discounts on gift cards through places like Raise, so weigh up all your options before buying them at full price from Kroger or one of its affiliate stores like Dillons, King Soopers, Ralphs, Fry’s or Smith’s.

You can earn 4x fuel points on gift cards purchased online or in-store, although there are a couple of differences between the two that are important to note. If you’ll be buying in-store, you have to load the digital coupons to your account first, whereas you’ll automatically earn 4x fuel points when buying gift cards from Kroger online.

The other thing to bear in mind is that buying the gift cards in-store means you can take advantage of the plethora of cards offering bonused spend at grocery stores right now. Kroger’s online gift card site has its payments processed by Blackhawk Network (owner of GiftCardMall and GiftCards.com), so those online orders don’t code as grocery purchases.

Thankful

Thanks for this. But note that under Key Terms you’re still showing the last promo dates, ending April 2.

Definite bummer that Amazon cards are now excluded.

OK, this sounds weird, but I always buy AM/PM gas cards to get my 4x at Freddy Why? Because we ues a lot of gas and the AM/PM card gets you gas at the low same as cash price. Win, Win.

Just in time to kick off the Chase FF quarterly grocery 5X bonus. If you have a Freedom Flex with the first year 5X offer those will stack to get 9X on your grocery (gift card) purchases up to $1500.

Shouldn’t you factor in the case that Kroger chain gas station is not necessarily the cheapest gas? You need to consider the opportunity cost such as if Costco cost 20 cents per gallon lower than Kroger. Then 1000 fuel points only yields to 80 cents per gallon saving.

Scott

Just FYI, I think it is 2024 now (sorry about the proofreading).

To maximize the fuel savings when using Kroger fuel points, I always bring four 5-gallon gas cans with me. My car takes 16 gallons and if I run my car nearly all the way down I’m generally able to get 33-35 gallons of gas per trip.

Thanks for the reminder but readers might want to check out the news about Kroger’s tightening the expiration of Fuel Points on Travel on Points’ website and blog as it may impact the value proposition/strategy for Fuel Points fans.

Our King Soopers just outside Denver now sells Disney gift cards only in the fixed $25 flavor instead of the variable $15-500 option. Makes buying $1,000 in Disney gift cards very inconvenient. I now know I can use the online option thanks to this article, but I’d prefer getting the grocery 4.5x bonus on my Amex EDP, so I’m wondering if anyone else in Aurora, Commerce City, or Brighton knows of a King Soopers that still sells the variable $15-500 option for Disney cards.

I purchased close to $900 dollars in Disney gift cards last weekend for upcoming trip to Disney World and received 3600 Kroger points. I also used my Delta Gold Card for $67 of the gifts cards and received a $10 statement. So check your credit cards offers to see if there are any deals with Kroger.

duh, bought one today. Didnd’t realize it didn’t start until tomorrow 🙁

We never stop learning how to play this game. There is at least one state, Wisconsin, where the Kroger affiliated grocery stores don’t allow the use of fuel rewards programs at the store located fuel pumps. I tried to fuel up at a Pick ‘n Save in WI but the pump would not offer me my $1.00/gallon discount. I went inside and asked the clerk at Money Services “What’s up with that?” She proceeded to describe how the State of WI stepped in and stopped Kroger from doing that when they started buying up stores in the state. She then told me that they made a concession by allowing those with such points to use them at BP stations in the state. The process varies from station to station, so go inside and ask the clerk at the BP station how to use your Grocery Store points for a discount at the pump. I have been able to do it twice now while traveling through WI, both times at $1.00/gallon. We never stop learning in this game. Hope this helps some.

nice explanations

Andrew

This has been stacking great with the +5X grocery referral bonus on AMEX cards for in-store gift card purchases! I’ve been able to find Holland America and Carnival cruise line gift cards in our local stores to pay for the remaining parts of our “free” cruise offers. In total ends up being about a 15% – 20% discount all told with the BCP card plus the fuel points.

yeah, i buy amazon and visa gc

Full points redemption in different states???

I just was in Tennessee and they allowed me the option of redeeming all 2000 of my point s.

Do you know of ANY other krogers in different states.that allow this? Michigan? Illinois? Or.whoever

Richard

I was passing through Decatur, AL some time ago and needed to fuel up. Kroger fuel pump indicated I could use all 5000+ points that I had. I thought it was a fluke and only used the usual 1000 limit. So that wasn’t a fluke, but rather a location based peculiarity?
