Carmelo Anthony, basketball. Olympics: 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 4 (3 gold, 1 bronze). Anthony is the only men’s player in Olympic history to win three gold medals in basketball.

Kristin Armstrong, cycling -- road race and time trial. Olympics: 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 3 gold. Armstrong won three consecutive gold medals in the time trial from 2008 to 2016.

Matt Biondi, swimming. Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992. Medals: 11 (8 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). Biondi competed in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 4x100 freestyle relay, 4x200 freestyle relay and the medley relay.

Simone Biles, gymnastics. Olympics: 2016. Medals: 5 (4 gold, 1 bronze). Biles, considered by many to be the greatest gymnast of all time, looks to add to her medal haul in 2021 at the Tokyo Games.

Matthew Centrowitz Jr., track and field. Olympics: 2012, 2016. Medals: 1 gold. Centrowitz, in 2016, became the first American man since 1908 to win gold in the 1,500 meters.

Natalie Coughlin, swimming. Olympics: 2004, 2008, 2012. Medals: 12 (3 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze). Coughlin, who is tied for the most medals by an American female swimmer, competed in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley, 4x100 freestyle relay, 4x200 freestyle relay and the medley relay.

Chris Duplanty, water polo. Olympics: 1988, 1992, 1996. Medals: 1 silver. Duplanty was a mainstay in goal in three Olympic Games.

Nicole Davis, indoor volleyball. Olympics: 2008, 2012. Medals: 2 silver. Davis was the star libero (defensive specialist) for two squads.

Ashton Eaton, track and field. Olympics: 2012, 2016. Medals: 2 gold. Eaton won back-to-back golds in the decathlon, earning the title of World's Greatest Athlete.

Teresa Edwards, basketball. Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000. Medals: 5 (4 gold, 1 bronze). Edwards is the only basketball player – female or male – to win five Olympic medals.

Ryan Franklin, baseball. Olympics: 2000. Medals: 1 gold. The pitcher went on to play for the Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and St. Louis Cardinals and currently works in the Cardinals’ front office.

Allyson Felix, track and field. Olympics: 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 9 (6 gold, 3 silver). Felix, who has competed in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay, has the most gold medals and is tied for the most overall medals in women’s Olympic track history.

Rulon Gardner, wrestling. Olympics: 2000, 2004. Medals: 2 (1 gold, 1 bronze). Gardner became a star in Greco-Roman wrestling after his success in the super-heavyweight division.

Florence Griffith-Joyner, track and field. Olympics: 1984, 1988. Medals: 5 (3 gold, 2 silver). Known as Flo Jo, she became a sensation in the 1980s before tragically dying from an epileptic seizure in 1998 at the age of 38.

Justin Huish, archery. Olympics: 1996. Medals: 2 gold. Huish became the first male archer to win two gold medals in a single Games since archery returned to the Olympics in 1972.

Kayla Harrison, judo. Olympics: 2012, 2016. Medals: 2 gold. Harrison, who competes in the half-heavyweight division, is the only American woman to win a judo gold medal in any weight class.

Race Imboden, fencing (foil). Olympics: 2012, 2016. Medals: 1 bronze. Imboden, who is also a menswear fashion model, is bidding to make his third Olympic team in Tokyo.

J.J. Isler, sailing. Olympics: 1992, 2000. Medals: 2 (1 silver, 1 bronze). Isler, right, with crew member Pease Glasser, left, after winning the silver in Sydney, competed in the 470 Class and was the first woman inducted into the Sailing World Hall of Fame.

Michael Jordan, basketball. Olympics: 1984, 1992. Medals: 2 gold. Jordan won his first Olympic gold following his junior season at North Carolina, the USA's last gold medal in the amateur era. As an NBA superstar in 1992, he was one of the main faces of the legendary "Dream Team."

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, track and field. Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996. Medals: 6 (3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). Joyner-Kersee, who competed in the heptathlon and long jump, is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most versatile female athletes in history.

Karch Kiraly, volleyball. Olympics: 1984 (indoor), 1988 (indoor), 1996 (beach). Medals: 3 gold. Kiraly is the only athlete in Olympic history to win gold medals in both indoor and beach volleyball.

Karen Kraft, rowing. Olympics: 1996, 2000. Medals: 2 (1 silver, 1 bronze). Kraft, front, wth Melissa Ryan in the Sydney Olympics, competed in coxless pairs and was a two-time USRowing Female Athlete of the Year.

Greg Louganis, diving. Olympics: 1976, 1984, 1988. Medals: 5 (4 gold, 1 silver). Louganis, who was both a springboard and platform diver, is the only man from any country to win four gold medals in diving.

Nastia Liukin, gymnastics. Olympics: 2008. Medals 5 (1 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze). Liukin, the all-around gold medalist in Beijing, has since become a gymnastics commentator for NBC.

LaShawn Merritt, track and field. Olympics: 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 4 (3 gold, 1 bronze). Merritt led a U.S. sweep of the 400 meters in Beijing, and after pulling out of the 400 in London, came back in 2016 to win bronze in Rio. He also led the USA to two golds in the 4x400-meter relay.

Ibtihaj Muhammad, fencing. Olympics: 2016. Medals: 1 bronze. Muhammad, who helped the USA win bronze in Rio in women's Team Sabre, became the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the USA in the Olympics.

Marty Nothstein, cycling. Olympics: 1996, 2000, 2004. Medals: 2 (1 gold, 1 silver). Nothstein is the only American -- male or female -- to win multiple medals in Sprint. Nothstein also competed in Keirin.

Anita Nall, swimming. Olympics: 1992. Medals: 3 (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). Nall, who swam the breaststroke and in the medley relay, twice broke the world record in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 1992 Olympic trials.

David O'Connor, equestrian. Olympics: 1996, 2000. Medals: 3 (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). O'Connor, who competed in three-day eventing, went on to serve as president of the United States Equestrian Federation from 2004 to 2012.

Leah O'Brien-Amico, softball. Olympics: 1996, 2000, 2004. Medals: 3 gold. O'Brien-Amico also won three NCAA championships with the Arizona Wildcats and was inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame in 2009.

Michael Phelps, swimming. Olympics: 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 28 (23 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze). The greatest swimmer ever, Phelps has won 14 more golds and 16 more total medals than any other swimmer -- male or female -- in history.

Christie Pearce, soccer. Olympics: 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012. Medals: 4 (3 gold, 1 silver). Pearce, who also won two World Cups, is the only soccer player – female or male – to win four Olympic medals.

Trevell Quinley, track and field. Olympics: 2008. Medals: None. Quinley, who competed in the long jump, won a bronze medal at the 2002 World Junior Championships.

Megan Quann-Jendrick, swimming. Olympics; 2000, 2008. Medals: 3 (2 gold, 1 silver). Quann-Jendrick, who swam the breaststroke and medley relay, set 27 American records and four world records in her swimming career.

Mark Reynolds, sailing. Olympics: 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000. Medals: 3 (2 gold, 1 silver). Reynolds, right, with Magnus Liljedahl in Sydney, competed in the Mixed Two Person Keelboat and is the most accomplished American sailor in Olympic history.

Kim Rhode, shooting. Olympics: 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 6 (3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze). Rhode, who competed in double trap and skeet, has won more gold medals and more overall medals than any female shooter in history.

Jack Sock, tennis. Olympics: 2016. Medals 2 (1 gold, 1 bronze). Sock teamed with Bethanie Mattek-Sands to win mixed doubles gold and Steve Johnson to win bronze in men's doubles for the USA.

Maggie Steffens, water polo. Olympics: 2012, 2016. Medals: 2 gold. Steffens led the USA in scoring in both gold-medal efforts in London and Rio. In 2012, she scored 21 total goals to set a new record for most by a woman in a single Olympic Games.

Steve Timmons, volleyball. Olympics: 1984, 1988, 1992. Medals: 3 (2 gold, 1 bronze). Timmons' three medals are the most by an American -- male or female -- in U.S. Olympic indoor volleyball history.

Diana Taurasi, basketball. Olympics: 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 4 gold. One of only five basketball players (all American women) to win four gold medals, Taurasi has also won three WNBA championships and three NCAA titles.

Eric Uptagrafft, shooting. Olympics: 1996, 2012. Medals: None. Uptagrafft competed in the men's 50-meter prone small-bore rifle.

Grace Upshaw, track and field. Olympics: 2004, 2008. Medals: None. Upshaw, who competed in the long jump, finished 9th in Athens in 2004 and 8th in Beijing in 2008.

Peter Vidmar, gymnastics. Olympics: 1984. Medals: 3 (2 gold, 1 silver). Vidmar helped the U.S. men win gold in the team event in Los Angeles and also won silver in the all-around and gold in the pommell horse.

Dana Vollmer, swimming. Olympics: 2004, 2012, 2016. Medals: 7 (5 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). Vollmer set a world record in London in the 100 butterfly en route to winning gold and took bronze in Rio. She has also won medals in the 4x100 freestyle relay, 4x200 freestyle relay and the medley relay.

Andre Ward, boxing. Olympics: 2004. Medals: 1 gold. Ward, left, competed in the light-heavyweight division in Athens and then turned pro, winning multiple world titles in two weight classes before retiring with a perfect 32-0 record.

Kerri Walsh Jennings, beach (and indoor) volleyball. Olympics: 2000 (indoor), 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016. Medals: 4 (3 gold, 1 bronze). Walsh Jennings won three consecutive gold medals with Misty May-Treanor from 2004-2012 and then won bronze with April Ross in 2016 to set a record for most medals in Olympic beach volleyball.

Tim Young, rowing. Olympics: 1996. Medals: 1 silver. Young, far right -- with (from left to right) Jason Gailes, Eric Mueller, Brian Jamieson -- rowed the men's quadruple sculls and helped capture the only medal the U.S. has ever won in the discipline.

Elaine Youngs, beach (and indoor) volleyball. Olympics: 1996 (indoor), 2004, 2008. Medals: 1 bronze. Youngs finished seventh with the U.S. indoor team in Atlanta then moved to the beach, taking bronze in Athens with Holly McPeak.

Zach Ziemek, track and field. Olympics: 2016. Medals: None. Ziemek finished seventh in the decathlon in Rio but looks to reach the medal podium in Tokyo.
