EVANSVILLE, Ind. — An Evansville man was arrested Friday after a two-hour standoff that began shortly after he allegedly tried to shoot his North Side neighbor in the head with a shotgun.

According to a news release from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called out to the 4000 block of Kleitz Road around 1:30 p.m., after a 911 caller reported a fight in progress and shots fired.

When officers arrived they were told that Waymon J. Rush, 56, of Evansville, had confronted one of his neighbors on the neighbor's property. During the argument, the victim told police, Rush pointed a shotgun directly at his neighbor's head and pulled the trigger.

However, the shotgun failed to discharge and the victim ran away, according to a release from the Sheriff's Office. The victim told investigators that as he fled, he heard Rush fire the gun. The victim's wife then took the shotgun away from Rush.

Deputies surrounded Rush's home next door after Rush ran inside and refused to come out. Two VCSO negotiators tried to convince Rush to surrender for about 90 minutes but were unsuccessful.

At about 3:30 p.m., according to the news release, an Evansville Police Department SWAT unit arrived in an armored vehicle and Rush surrendered without further incident.

Rush was booked into Vanderburgh County Jail and is being held on no bond, on preliminary charges of Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon and Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon, both Class 5 felonies.
