NFU says it must be part of racism solution

The president of the National Farmers Union says racism and policy brutality are important topics, brought to light from the death of George Floyd, but can be difficult and uncomfortable to discuss.

Rob Larew tells Brownfield Ag News there must be a national effort to address them, “Lots of times when we talk about the systemic racism that exists in our country we may be tempted to think it is not our problem, that it doesn’t affect us directly. And yet, it IS in rural America. It IS in urban America.”

Larew says Farmers Union wants to be part of the solution, “We have members who are black farmers. We have employees across the network. We have family members – everyone who has been judged and has received racist implications simply for the color of their skin. So, we have to be part of that solution.”

Larew says NFU has strong roots in promoting womens’ voting rights and civil rights for everyone.

American Farm Bureau Federation says it also strongly condemns racism and police brutality and is forming a working group to determine how its staff “can be a positive influence against racism.”
