88% of U.S. corn, 65% of soybeans planted

U.S. corn and soybean planting remains ahead of average, even with parts of the Corn Belt experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding this past weekend.

As of Sunday, 88% of corn is planted, compared to the five-year average of 82%, with 64% of the crop emerged, compared to 58% on average. 70% of the crop is rated good to excellent, with 25% called fair and the remaining 5% poor to very poor.

65% of soybeans are planted, compared to the usual pace of 55%, with 35% emerged, compared to 27% on average.

68% of winter wheat has headed, slower than normal, with 54% of the crop in good to excellent shape, up 2% on the week.

81% of spring wheat is planted, compared to 90% on average, and 51% has emerged, compared to 65% typically in late May.

53% of cotton is planted, matching the five-year average.

89% of rice is planted and 71% has emerged, both behind the respective usual paces, with 62% of the crop in good to excellent condition, 2% less than last week.

39% of sorghum is planted, a little bit ahead of normal.

50% of U.S. pastures and rangelands are called good to excellent, up 3% from the previous week.

The USDA’s 2020 planted area totals are out June 30th.
