Winter wheat condition improves over the winter

The national condition of winter wheat improved during the winter. USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says that is not usually the case, “Typically, you see weather systems and cold waves and drought taking a whack at winter wheat during the winter. It’s not unusual at all. In fact, it’s quite common to see lower conditions in the spring than we finished up with in the fall.”

In November, winter wheat nationwide was 52% good to excellent. That’s up 10% to 62% as of now.  And, the percentage of wheat that was in poor condition in the fall has dropped, from 14% to just nine-percent.

Rippey says there are some exceptions, where winter wheat conditions worsened, in California, Colorado and Montana.
